Ms. Stella Asao a soybean farmer in Ojukot village, Oriamo sub-county, Kaberamaido district had been growing the local soybean varieties for the past 2 years.
Through the SNV- CRAFT project, she was introduced to the improved soybean varieties which she didn’t know about before and also trained on how best to manage her soybean field by doing the right agronomic practices. She picked a keen interest in Maksoy 3N and planted it in season 2022A since she had access to good quality seed through Soybean Africa Ltd. Compared to the local varieties that are short and have low pod load with low yields, she says Maksoy 3N is a tall variety which pods right from the bottom of the plant to the top, giving a good pod load and high yield. Previously, she would harvest 1 to 2 bags of soybean per acre from the local variety but when she planted Maksoy 3N, she harvested 4 bags per acre and believes this would have been much better if her crop wasn’t affected by the prolonged drought during the season. She was able to find market for her soybean which she sold off at 2,500/- per kg.
